Blood Angels Venerable Dreadnought

Venerable dreadnought completed for the Blood Angels. Last model in that commission. As ever, you can click the image for a larger view.

I've also added a link to the Winterdyne Commission Modelling Facebook Page. Quite often I post updates there before this blog is updated, plus you can message me with enquiries and so forth.

3rd Blood Angels Assault Squad

The third and final assault squad in the Blood Angels army I'm working on. As ever you can click the images for a larger view. Bear in mind these are TABLETOP pieces, not competition grade, so things aren't quite as tight as I might have done them if I were devoting more time to it. I may go back and revisit all the chainswords in the whole army in the final tweaks phase to add some wear and tear, it's been noted they're a bit clean at the moment...

Shoulder pad detail sculpts by Chris Straw

A quick job by Chris Straw to sculpt insignia discs and laurel wreaths onto some Forge World Tartaros pattern Terminator shoulder pads. These will be sent as-is to the client.

We don't just do painting, y'see. As usual, you can click the image for a larger view.

Bushido Commission completed

Chris has completed the Bushido commision now. These pictures are of the varnished, ready product. I've not really had the time to retake the previous pics to a good enough standard (really need to get a decent photo studio set up), but they're all the same finish (Windsor & Newton Galleria Satin). I find this is about the nicest general-purpose varnish; keeps the colour saturation up and isn't too glossy. I think the Samurai above is one of my favourite ever miniatures. Really nice (and my, he is a big chap!). As usual, click the images for a larger view...

Bushido Commission WIP

A collection of Bushido miniatures painted by Chris Straw. As usual we've er, pushed (yes I think that makes it sound deliberate) the bounds of tabletop level work; we don't let stuff out that we wouldn't be happy to put on a table ourselves. There's another few miniatures to go on this job before I (Maz) finish off the photography and varnishing...

SIlver in Golden Demon UK 2012!

The Titan finally got done (actually with a couple of days to spare for tweaking and so on).

And it got Silver in Diorama! The piece that took Gold also took the Sword (overall trophy) so basically it looks very much like I came 2nd to the Sword! Which is a bit weird for just my 3rd time out.

I'd like to take a moment to shout out to the other painters and folks met at GDUK (and the pre-show painters' dinner, which was loads of fun). See you all again next year, and I'll try and organise the suite again for a mini pre-show show. As we didn't know we'd get that untl we were in it (and it was scarcely believable!) we didn't use it to full advantage. Next time, Gadget! Next time!

Very much enjoyed working on this piece, though it was hard, hard work. Looking forward to sending it off to its new home, once I'm done with the rest of the commissions for the same client. I'm still working through a backlog of jobs (some of which are delegated), and feel it best to say that we won't be taking on anything else for this year while we clear the decks.

As usual, you can click the image for a larger view. This thing is the devil itself to photograph, so more shots will be put up as and when I feel they're good enough.

WIP Warhound Titan Diorama (3)

More progress on the Titan. Some cleaning up to do, particularly around the instrument panels, but it's getting there. There will also be pigments adding, but that will be done a bit later on. As ever, you can click the images for larger views.

WIP Warhound Titan Diorama (2)

Some long overdue progress shots of the Warhound diorama. I've been a bit slack with keeping the blog updated (the Facebook page is so much easier!) but I've finally got round to it. As ever you can click the images for larger views. I think I've probably got about 5 weeks work left on the diorama, so it's cutting it fairly close.

GDUK2012 Warhound Diorama 'Hunting Bigger Game'

Ok, this is now on the painting table (and occupying most of another table too). Prospective entry for either Open or Diorama categories at GDUK 2012. Commission piece for a very regular client. I have other pieces to work on as this goes, but this one NEEDS to be done for GDUK.

Probably the most dynamic pose you can squeeze out of a Forgeworld Warhound, and requiring an extreme amount of reinforcement. The entire supporting leg has 2 lengths of 3mm diameter steel rod running through it. However as the rods are parallel in the mid-piece of the leg, the model still exhibits some twisting there in warm conditions (I work in a conservatory studio, where the temperatures can hit 35C). To solve this I found the simplest solution is a barrel lodged under the back toe of the lead foot. You can see it in the image above. It's also easy to remove for short term display. At extreme, over 1 kg of weight is being supported by a 7mm x 12mm piece of resin, set way off from the point of balance. It was... interesting... finding out whether the pose would work.

There is a fully detailed interior (including the FW Titan Techpriest), more of which will be seen in later posts.

The banners are paper, and temporary - the final ones will be painted and curved before mounting.

Cretian (Minotaurs) Infantry Equipment Set Available Now

Another infantry equipment set is now available. Containing shield and handle, Cretian style sword and scabbard and a long trident, this set is ideal for building up models with an ancient Greek theme. The Minotaur head on the shield is sculpted on, but would be simple enough to file back if a plain shield was wanted. To assemble this kit you'll need a soft sanding stick or fine (600 and 1200 grit) emery papers to clean up the casting channels from the trident points.
This kit is provided unpainted and unassembled. Scenic items are not included.
Pricing is £3.00 per set plus P&P from me directly - contact enquiries@winterdyne.co.uk or you can buy from ebay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170841625201, where the pricing per set includes P&P and all fees, so is a little higher.

Macross / Robotech Regult Tactical Pod (Preproduction)

The first Regult Tactical Pod of the bunch I have got some paint thrown at it recently. These models are quite fiddly to put together, but look pretty good when done. Trickiest part is cleaning up the parts prior to assembly and painting. Also made some tweaks to the Tomahawk, so there are some update shots of that below. As ever you can click any of the images for a larger view.

Macross / Robotech Destroid Tomahawk Preproduction Model

I was lucky enough to get a bunch of preproduction models for a Macross / Robotech miniatures game. And they're lovely. The client is still attempting to secure licensing and wants to set their game around the first Zentraedi conflict - so if you are, or you know someone at either Harmony Gold (Robotech) or Studio Nue (Macross) please drop us an email so we can get contact made with the manufacturer.

I've built a fair few types of Tomahawk, and this is one of the nicer ones. For a gaming piece it's ideal - enough detail to be fun to paint (and to look the part) but not too much to clutter the piece and make it difficult to paint. This one went from bare resin to finished inside of 5 hours (including cleaning and drying the resin). Pretty good for a model of which there are only likely to be half a dozen in a force.

As ever, you can click the images for a larger view.

WIP Custom Space Marine helmets and plumes

Along with what seems like a million other sculpt and build-heavy jobs, I've been working on a commission for a set of custom helmets to fit on Games Workshop Space Marines. The client specified a more aggressive, snarling look for the basic helmet, along with Spartan style helmet plumes for Assault Marines.

The plumes at least will be available to buy soon, as will the helmets if I can diverge them from the Space Marine aesthetic a bit more.
