Sanguinary Phalanx HQ

The sanguinary phalanx commission is finally done. I'm fairly pleased with how the candy-coat effect has come out, especially when contrasted against the flat wings and banner. Some subtle OSL on the plasma pistols has also worked well (I don't often use Hawk Turquoise, but it's really a nice paint!). Base rims have been knocked back to matt as the gloss was a bit much I think.

As usual, click the images for a larger view.

How in the world did you get that color of red!?

The red is a candy coat technique; Start from a black undercoat and do a zenithal highlight up from boltgun metal through to a pure silver. Once this is done, apply several coats of clear red (I used VMC Clear Red). Blue washes to shade, and highlight with a mix of the silver and red. Glaze again with clear red to depink it a bit, then gloss coat with the shiniest stuff you can find.
