Space Hulk Terminators Complete - Squad Gideon
These shots are of the final, varnished miniatures that are currently enroute to the client. Been a while in sending, as the same client also commissioned the Urien Rakarth model. As usual click the images for a larger view.
Space Hulk Terminators Complete - Squad Lorenzo
Wednesday, 27 April 2011
WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (12)
Bar the varnishing, the Space Hulk Terminators and CAT are complete. I've washed back the foliage so it's not such an in-your-face green now, and I think it looks a lot better. These two images are indicative of the final look - once the varnish is on, I'll reshoot the entire commission for a consistent photo set. As ever, click on the images above for a larger view.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (11)
So the last two Terminators are all but done - just the basing (and I notice from these pics I've forgotten the purity seal on the Librarian's leg) to do, then it's on to varnishing. Which means some repairs on the airbrush and a trip to buy jars to mix up varnish in.
Pretty pleased with the OSL and plasma effect on the Librarian. Click the images below for a larger view.

Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (10)
Slowly getting back in the swing of things. Sergeant Lorenzo's been finished off. The client requested a crystal style power blade, and this has been coupled with some OSL to give it an energised feel. Deviating slightly from the studio scheme at the client's request the chest eagle and heraldic wings are finished in white rather than gold. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with how this has come out. As ever, click the images for larger versions.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (9)
Wow, hard to believe this is the ninth update on this commission. Squad Lorenzo is now pretty much done, with the exception of the Sergeant himself. Hopefully I'll get him finished for the weekend, leaving just the Librarian and the Lightning Claw Terminator to do next week before I fly to Las Vegas for my wedding. It's very likely that I'll tweak the foliage some as I'm not very happy with the paintwork on some of the brass etch. Also the coarse turf scatter could do with staining to give it some variety. I'll do this sort of thing in one batch once everything's finished. More pics below, as usual, click the images for a larger view.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (8)
Sergeant Gideon completed. As per the client's request the sergeants and Librarian will be painted to a higher standard than the rest of the marines. To this end, I've used an extended version of the red recipe, using more intermediate mixes at the orange end of the scale. The metals and gems also use a more complex technique. As usual, click on the images for a larger view.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (7)
Further progress on the Space Hulk commission. Now up to 4 terminators (and the CAT) done. Next up, for a break from routine is the sergeant for this squad, which is to be done to competition level. By comparison these are to a (high) character tabletop standard. As usual, click on the images for a large view.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (6)
More work done. Noctis now finished. I reused the brass etch plant previously removed from Omnio, having figured out a nice method for kinking the leaves. I think it looks a lot better. Pigments used on the post are from Secret Weapon Miniatures (I used Forgeworld pigments on Omnio). Pretty nice range of colours. Justin's asked that I put a .PDF tutorial together for pigment techniques, so I took in-progress shots to show what I do for general rust effects. They'll find their way into the tutorial along with some other effects. As usual, click the image above for a larger view.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (5)
Work continues on the Space Hulk commission. Today I revisited the chipping on Omnio (having replaced my failing brushes), and painted up the CAT. I'm pretty happy with these now. Tomorrow I'll be working on Noctis. As ever, click on the images for larger versions.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (4)
The first of the Terminators, Brother Omnio is pretty much complete, with just the varnishing phase to go. Heraldry is as per the Space Hulk Missions book. Note that this model is painted to what I'd call a 'Character' level, not the usuall rank and file.
Click on the image above for a larger view.
The client didn't like the brass etch (I wasn't too sold on it either) so it's been removed. The current state of the mini is shown below. Click the image for a larger view.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (3)
Well, after the Christmas / New Year break I'm rolling again. Didn't quite get this guy finished today - about 2 hours to go on him I think, mostly gems and smoothing out some of the blends. OSL heavy, as per the client's specification. You'll notice the highlight and shade glazes have bumped the saturation on the mini. Quite pleased with how this is going. Around 7 hours work on top of the zenithal work as shown previously.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (2)
Continuing on from the last WIP post, the Terminators (and CAT, not shown) have had the first pass zenithal highlights applied and the bases blacked. The reason for blacking the bases is to provide a point of contrast against the basecoat zenithal work so it can be judged if it's enough or not.
You'll notice that these appear a little desaturated - this is intentional as it allows the colour to be deepened rather than overdone by the subsequent shading and highlighting passes that are done by hand. The two sergeants and the Librarian will have a lot more work done on them at this stage than the other Terminators as the client has specified that these characters are to be done to competition standard.

WIP Space Hulk Terminators and CAT (1)
Clients have given feedback suggesting that the blog is a good place for Work-in-Progress information - rather than cluttering up the 'Gallery' tag which will be used for complete jobs, the 'Works in Progress' tag can be used to see what's been worked on, when.
It should be noted that Work in Progress pictures are not necessarily indicative of the final quality of the pieces, nor are they intended as a step-by-step how to - for those you should check out the 'Tutorials' tag. Not every commission may have Work in Progress updates here on the blog.
My current commission is a set of Space Hulk Terminators, and their CAT. The CAT has had its antenna extended using a piece of paperclip wire, and the Terminators themselves have been rebased onto 40mm bases with some assorted bitz on there. Use of bitz in this manner is free on commissions - I'll happily use what I have to hand if I think it will add to the model. In this case as the client has requested a jungle theme I want to give the impression that something old and forgotten is buried in the Jungle. A bit like 'Lost' then.
So, here are today's pictures:
